Missing Worker Found Trapped Behind Store Shelves After a Decade

Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada’s disappearance in 2009 shocked his family and community. The 25-year-old, who worked at a No Frills supermarket in Council Bluffs, Iowa, vanished one winter night after fleeing his home in a distressed state. He left barefoot in freezing temperatures during a blizzard, without his keys or car, sparking a frantic search.

For years, his family held on to hope but found no trace. Murillo-Moncada was known to suffer hallucinations and had stopped taking medication at the time. Despite police investigations, no leads emerged.

The mystery was solved in 2019 when workers dismantling the closed supermarket discovered his body wedged in an 18-inch gap behind a refrigerator unit. DNA testing confirmed his identity six months later. Investigators believe he climbed atop the freezers and accidentally fell into the space, becoming trapped. The loud noise of compressors likely muffled any calls for help.

Murillo-Moncada’s death was ruled accidental, leaving many stunned by the tragic, isolated end to a decade-long mystery.
