Gerard McAliece, a 68-year-old grandad from Kilmacolm, Scotland, had been living with a nose that kept growing for six years, eventually hanging over his mouth and affecting his daily life. Initially thinking it was just aging, Gerard ignored the changes as his nose enlarged due to a rare skin condition called Rhinophyma, caused by an overgrowth of sebaceous glands and connective tissue.
The condition became so severe that Gerard struggled to eat, drink, and even kiss his wife Carol, something he hadn’t been able to do properly for years. People stared and some turned away when they saw him, but Gerard tried to accept himself as he was.
Doctors initially dismissed his concerns as cosmetic since he could still breathe easily, leading Gerard to avoid further medical help. It was Carol who finally reached out to Ever Clinic in Glasgow, known for successfully treating Rhinophyma patients.
Surgeons, led by Dr. Cormac Convery, performed a complicated four-hour operation removing excess tissue and reshaping Gerard’s nose—a task described as their biggest and most challenging yet. The results were life-changing. Gerard says he feels like himself again, now socializing, going out for drinks, and enjoying meals with Carol after years of hiding away.
Jonathan Toye, managing director of Ever Clinic, noted Gerard was the most severe case they had ever treated and praised Dr. Cormac’s outstanding work. Gerard hopes his story encourages others with similar issues to seek help without delay.
