Virginia 10-Year-Old Autumn Bushman Dies by Su-icide After Standing Up to Bullies

Autumn Bushman was a vibrant and fearless 10-year-old with a kind heart and a love for dance, cheer, and archery. But on March 21, 2025, the Bushman family’s world was shattered when Autumn died by suicide at their home in Roanoke, Virginia, after enduring relentless bullying.

Autumn’s troubles began when she stood up for classmates being bullied at Mountain View Elementary School. Instead of being praised, she became the next target. The bullying reportedly started when she began fourth grade the previous August, and despite reports to the school, the abuse continued unabated.

In the weeks before her death, Autumn’s demeanor changed—her bright smile dimmed, she wore darker clothes, played less, and withdrew socially. Her parents were devastated, saying they saw no clear warning signs but noted her spark had faded.

Her mother, Summer, recounted when Autumn tearfully asked to stay home from school due to stress. Though the family alerted school officials, they feel the school’s response was insufficient to protect her.

Autumn’s funeral was a community event, with her family urging others to speak up early about bullying and mental health. Her father Mark posted a message calling for community-wide action to end bullying and create a supportive environment for all children.
